The increasing demand for improved product quality is placing greater emphasis on cleanliness and lubrication of sheetmetal used in automotive stamping. Dirt and improper film coating influences the overall quality of the sheetmetal stamping. Dirt or debris left on the sheetmetal alters the finished product quality by creating surface blemishes. Improper film coating also affects product quality through blemishes but the major effect is in die operations.

Coated blanks provide lubrication to the die forming operation. Too little film coating may result in scratched or marred parts. Too much coating may cause hydroforming which produces imperfections in the form of dimples. Excess fluids also create problems with quality due to fluid buildup in the dies. Excess fluids, just like sheetmetal scrap, needs to be removed.
